Easter Basket - Boy Style!

Morena, from Morena's Corner, is always whippin' up something amazing.  I love this little "basket" she made!  Perfect for little boys!

I showed you how to make a basket for a princess here, but what about the boys?
I have three sons myself, so I know firsthand how hard it is to find
crafting projects for boys.  This metal basket got the seal of approval from my guys.  I hope yours will like it, too!

The metal bucket is available at Lowes, for just $3.50.

I cut the chevron design on vinyl and adhered it.  I had to fold it in places to make it work.

I dabbed on paint with a sponge brush to give it a grungy look.

Let it dry then remove vinyl.

I cut the designs I wanted out of vinyl, using my Silhouette.

 Voila!

Something my boys won't be embarrassed to carry at an Easter egg hunt, and that can be used for storage in their rooms, as well!

DIY Mercury Glass

I love me some Heidi...and this is just one more reason why! Thanks Heidi for being so crafty!!

DIY Mercury Glass {Tutorial}

Lately I've been daydreaming about the mercury glass accessories that seem to be all the rage these days. I've fallen in love with a few pieces, but I just can't justify spending any money on breakable objects with a crazy toddler on the loose around here. Aren't these lovely, though?

(both photos above from West Elm)

I'm pretty sure that I actually NEED this lamp.
But like I said, I'm not about to purchase breakables, so I set out to try to recreate the look myself. I have to preface this tutorial by saying that I used a shiny silver metallic paint that I had on-hand for my faux mercury glass, and I really like the look of the more brushed finish; however, if you want a super shiny mirrored finish you can use Krylon Looking Glass Mirror-Like Spray Paint to achieve that look using these same steps.

I used items that I already had hiding out in my cupboards - a couple of assorted clear glass votive holders and a square glass vase that was leftover from my sister's wedding (thanks, Kari!).

Start with these basic supplies: your glassware, metallic spray paint and a spray bottle that will spray in a fine mist.

Mist the inside of your glass with water, and spray it with the silver paint while the water is still wet.

I found that I really liked the way it looked when I sprayed water, then silver paint, and then a bit of water again. Continue to add layers of water and silver paint until you get the desired look. If you want your "mercury glass" to look shiny, you can stop at this point (like I did for my votive holders) or proceed to the next step for more of an aged finish...

Dark mercury glass has a bit of a gold-black finish, so I mixed a drop or two of black paint to a few tablespoons of metallic gold paint and lightly dabbed the mixture inside of my vase to fill in the blank spaces.

These pictures make it look a lot blacker that it really is, but for some reason the camera just isn't capturing the gold very well (perhaps because my camera is thisclose to death, and half of these photos were actually taken with my phone!).

You can see the difference between the aged look on the vase and the shinier look of the votive holders. I'm still not sure which one I like best, but I like the variety when they're all together.

Quick and easy way to add a little shine to your mantle...if you're like me, you probably already have the supplies just laying around. So what are you waiting for!?

This is what it looks like with the flash on, but really I just wanted to show off my cute new sign that I made last night too ;)

Finishing Frames!

Morena from Morena's Corner really did some cute things with the wooden frames we sold last month! If you missed the frames.. have no fear and be sure to check the site this week - they just might be making another appearance!

I adore all the quirky unfinished wood frames that are the rage now!  There are so many ways to dress them up to suit your style and home decor.  This tutorial will show you a quick way to embellish them.

I always start by painting the entire frame.

I apply modge podge to the front and adhere the frame to the paper.

Once it has dried, I use my razor to cut off the excess paper.

Sand all the edges and distress with ink if desired.

I embellished this frame with buttons and twine.
I covered a 4x6 metal sheet with coordinating paper and adhered it behind the frame.

I used my one inch circle punch to cut out an image from a scrap and inserted it into a bottle cap to make a matching magnet.

I love the end result!

The paper I chose for this frame was so busy that I didn't feel any embellishing was necessary.

  Cutie vintage looking magnet board!

I hope you'll keep checking back to Morena's Corner to see what I'm doing with my other two frames!  Come by again to learn how to DIY crackle paint and how to do my favorite image transfer method!

I hope to "see" you soon!

**All the items used for this project were purchased here.

Customized 2" Blocks

Morena from Morena's Corner is so super crafty and always amazes me with the cute things she creates! Check out these adorable 2" blocks she made for her babe..

I've been asked a few times to share how I made these blocks for my son's room, so here goes.  These are really easy and fun to make!

1.  Paint two inch square blocks with one coat of paint.
You can find the blocks at Mindy Mae's Market.

2.  Cut paper into two inch squares.  Distress the edges.  Apply to blocks with modge podge.

3.  Adhere stickers and chipboard.  Age them with distress ink.  (I used "vintage photo" distress ink.  I cut a scrap of felt, wad it up, dab it on the ink pad, and then rub in a circular motion on the edges of the embellishment.)

4.  Seal all sides with another coat of modge podge.  I used the matte finish.

5.  For the letters,  I applied crackle medium to chipboard sticker letters.  After it had dried overnight I rubbed Vintage Photo distress ink on it to get into the cracks.  Then I wiped it with a soft cloth to get the excess ink off.

These are truly simple and fun to make!  My two year old daughter likes her brother's blocks so much that I will be making her a set next!

BottleCap Magnets

So... I went on a little magnet frenzy this past weekend and made lots of adorable bottlecap magnets!  Here is what happened...
First, I got an 8x10 steel sheet and two rolls of Washi Tape.  I did a couple strips on the edges to spice up by steel and voila, I have a magnet board. :)

Then, I got together my bottlecaps, epoxy stickers, magnets, and E6000. I couldn't find my 1" round punch so I simply stuck my epoxy sticker down on the paper right where I wanted, and cut around it.  Put a little E6000 inside the bottlecap, dropped in my epoxy (with the scrapbook paper attached) and let it dry.  Then I glued the magnet to the back and I'm done!  These were so simple to make that I got a little carried away...

So super simple...and I love them!  I have no idea what I'll do with 45 magnets but...they're cute!
