Boutique, BABY!

It's kinda like Christmas...a lot like Christmas.
Both sides...the innocent, believing child Christmas and the adult, magic-making Christmas. Putting on a boutique take prep work, emails, phone calls, signs, ads, mailers, flyers, blog buttons and posts. I takes time to find the right vendors that will bring products that will make our friends feel that rush of excitement when they step in through our doors. It's fun to plan, to map out, to watch details and figure final steps in orchestrating something like this, but then....

It's that giddy, nervous, hopeful -yes-I-may-throw-up-out-of -pure-excited-ness feeling WE get to experience, too. As vendors come in and set up, as we set up...as we walk through all the amazingly fun goodies that all of these lovely vendors have worked so hard to assemble and present. I don't sleep the night before- just like Christmas.

So even if it's not in your budget- you don't have to buy a thing...those feelings are all free and we'd love for you to come and experience Mindy Mae's Market. :D

Tooth Paste Dispenser Cover-UP!

We all probably have accured quite the washi tape collection. I know I am well on my way....

And it doesn't help that I KEEP finding ways to use it. I took my kids to Walmart tonight to make another dent in their back-to-school lists. While we were on the toothbrush aisle, my oldest reminded me that we had discussed trying a toothpaste dispenser. We hadn't been able to find on FOREVER. The only problem...we had a choice between Dora and Sponge Bob. Boo. I almost walked away. Until....I remembered I had WASHI TAPE!

We went with Dora...she seemed less...foreboding.

I came home and picked out my colors...and started wrapping. It took me three {magic number for me?} times around to fully cover Dora's Exploration on the contraption.

Once I finished wrapping I had some extra 'overage' of washi tape over parts that I needed to be NOT covered....

So I found my ever-illusive razor blade {not really a good thing in a house of four children}. It was almost magical at cleanly removing the excess washi tape.

 Once I had clean lines all around it was time for Mod Podge. {I'm kind of glad I can type it because I'm pretty sure I say it wrong.}

Here's the second coat of Mod Podge. I let it dry completely and then I assembled the parts (two, not counting the toothpaste tube I added).

We attached it the mirror and we are set to conquer the toothpaste explosions that seemed to occur so regularly in my children's bathrooms.

Have you already purchased {and thrown out?} this addition to my bathroom?
How did it work for you?

Second Feature: Washi Tape!!

We want to thank Melanie from Bear Rabbit Bear Crafts for linking up this A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E Washi-covered bike helmet!  We've had serious melt-downs in my house due to having to wear "boy" helmets because my four year-old has outgrown her princess one. NOW I can have her help me make her her VERY OWN princess helmet!

I absolutely love the antiqued look of these mini suitcases!  The thoughtful use of the striped washi tape and the vintage-inspired luggage tags/stickers are incredible!  It has given me new inspiration for a few rooms in my house!

Nikki's Niche- Buckle-Up Bracelets!

Top o' the morning! I wanted to explore a couple of different options with the Buckle-Up Bracelets...just to spark your imagination!

For the first braclet- I chose white, I used some purple washi tape- which you can purchase in our store.

I laid the bracelet right down the center of the tape and wrapped the bracelet as best as I could.

The were still edges not quite laying flat...I wanted it to adhere, but not get sticky later and not be a total mess to apply....so I opted for clear fingernail polish.

I layered it- putting down the first layer and waiting until it got tacky...then pressing any edges sticking up back down and then coating it will a second layer of polish.

Then I just let it dry.

Second option:

I used a large cabochon I had left over from another project...
Here it is in relation to a small cabochon you'd get in one of our assortments.
I used a hot glue gun and a small piece of felt to secure the cabochon to the bracelet.
Taking pictures with one hand proved to be a bit tricky....

Option 3:

I had some fabric flowers...added a shoe clip....

 Added the bucklet bracelet....
 And you're done!

So here were three, quick, easy and customizable bracelet options to apply to YOUR Buckle-Up Bracelets!

Okay...I couldn't resist one more. I put three together and made a cute headband...

You can control the size simply buy taking more in on each side

There you have MY take on these fun little belt-like buckle bracelets!

Mom's Crafty Space - Washi Candles

This is SO simple that it really doesn't even need a step-by-step tutorial (not that that's ever stopped me from doing one anyway!). The results are lovely, the combinations endless, and you can swap out the colors/patterns as often as you want or use my handy trick for making it a permanent part of the candle.

Start by choosing your favorite washi tapes...this is probably the most difficult part (especially if you're washi tape obsessed like me! This isn't even my entire collection!). Mindy Mae's Market has the best prices and some fantastic patterns of washi tape - most of the ones you see pictured here came from Mindy Mae's. I found that 5-9 stripes of tape looked best on 6" pilar candles.

You can apply your tape strip-by-strip to the candle, or you can do like I did - lay out a sheet of waxed paper and apply your strips to the waxed paper, slightly overlapping each strip with the last. This gives you a little more flexibility to play with pattern and color arrangement before sticking them on to your candle.

Peel up the strips as one large piece.

Start wrapping the washi tape around your candle, peeling it off of the waxed paper as you wrap.

Smooth it all out, and you're finished - easy peasy! If you'd like to make the tape a permanent part of the candle, set your blow dryer to the highest heat setting and quickly give the candle a few blasts of hot air, using your finger to smooth and lightly press the tape into the top layer of slightly melted wax to permanently adhere it to the candle.

Trust me when I say that you're going to wish you have a dozen or so candles to washi, so stock up and/or raid your cabinets and shelves! I'm heading back to the store to pick up some more in different shapes and sizes because it's definitely addictive (and a great way to make use of the giant washi tape collection I have!).

Heidi: Thanks for coming over from Mom's Crafty Space to share this wonderfully easy and adorable use of Washi Tape from our shop! xoxo

Nikki's Niche- Washi YOUR Window!

IMG_4304I started with a window we will be replacing in the future- how FAR in the future, I don’t know. I wanted to do something to perk it up and hide the broken glass (inherited when we purchased the home).
I started applying washi tape in strips- taking time to line up the polka-dots (it was easier when it was light outside (the outside light made the polka-dots more visible).
IMG_4307Here’s where I stopped for the night. I had only used just over half of my washi tape roll! (Now I’m scoping out other ways to use it and accent the rest of the room.)

I started the next day measuring the window to find midpoints, horizontally and vertically; top and bottom. We drew light pencil lines a couple of inches from the bottom straight across horizontally and then one down the center of the window (be sure to notate where these two meet.)IMG_4308                                         IMG_4311
Then I measured the diameter of the clear cup I was using (this is hubby- he takes over when he thinks I’m doing things wrong…that’s quite often…and sometimes on purpose.)  We used the same pencil to mark the diameter…act as if the lip of the cup was a compass…make a mark at North, South, East and West.                                                                             IMG_4310IMG_4309

Starting in the center of the window and at the middle of the window-  line up North and South of the cup on this line. Then match up East and West on the horizontal line drawn in the beginning.IMG_4315

Once you are lined up, lightly trace the bottom of the cup. Decide on the distance you’d like between the scallops…continuing to use the East-West line as a guide on the window and your East-West marks on your cup as well. Once you’ve finished in one direction, start on the opposite side.
IMG_4320
Using a razor blade, we cut out the scallops and then peeled the remaining washi tape off!

Here’s a couple of shots of it for you! I love it- not too much, not too little- and not taking up space in a room that doesn’t have much to spare! Plus, if I decide I don't like it...it's an easy fix!:)
